Before opening her own salon, Maria spent years renting a chair and building loyal relationships with clients, all while carrying a dream of one day creating something of her own. That dream became even more meaningful when her daughter shared that she hoped to follow in her footsteps and become a hairstylist too. Inspired by the possibility of building a legacy for her family, Maria took a leap of faith and opened Mariana Salon. Recently celebrating five years in business, her salon stands as a reflection of perseverance, sacrifice, and love for her craft.

Opening a business during uncertain times came with challenges Maria never expected. The COVID-19 pandemic tested small businesses everywhere. Through closures and instability, Maria remained hopeful. She believes one of the biggest reasons she survived was simple but powerful: communication. By staying connected with her clients and nurturing those relationships, she maintained trust and support during one of the most difficult periods for small business owners. Her resilience carried her through the pandemic, but new obstacles soon emerged with the construction of the East San Fernando Valley Light Rail along Van Nuys Boulevard, impacting visibility and access for many local businesses.

Rather than giving up, Maria adapted once again. While loyal clients continued to support her, attracting new customers became increasingly important. She relied on her online presence and positive reviews to bring in new business, only to discover her Google profile incorrectly showed Mariana Salon’s hours of operation. Through support from New Economics for Women (NEW), Maria was able to update her business profile, improve visibility through search tags, and ensure customers could find accurate information online. She also connected with business consultants to review reporting requirements and confirm her gross sales had been properly submitted for her seller’s permit. Now, with guidance from NEW, Maria is applying for the Metro Business Interruption Fund.. Reflecting on the support she received, Maria shared, “Without New Economics for Women (NEW), I would not have known these services and help existed.” Through every hardship, Maria’s hope has remained unwavering. Her story is a reminder that resilience, adaptability, and community support can help small businesses continue growing, even in the face of constant change.

Mariana Salon

7026 1/2 Van Nuys Blvd., Van Nuys CA 91405

TikTok: @marianasalonx

(818) 310-3505

[20

post-37578","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog
["GET
