When the Eaton Fire swept through Altadena, entrepreneur and production designer Maggie Ruder lost her home, her creative workspace, and the foundation of her business. Yet in the aftermath, she became one of the community’s most active organizers, using her entrepreneurial skills to help rebuild the cultural and economic life of Altadena. Ruder’s leadership reflects a powerful truth: small‑business owners are often the first to step forward after disaster, transforming personal loss into community action. Her work has helped create spaces where residents can reconnect, heal, and begin imagining a future beyond the fire.

That vision took shape through Winter Bloom, a 2026 market and gathering designed to restore Altadena’s creative economy while supporting fire‑impacted families. Under Ruder’s guidance, Winter Bloom grew into a vibrant ecosystem of local makers, food artisans, healers, and small businesses—many of whom lost inventory, equipment, or workspace during the fire. The event blends commerce with community care, offering workshops, music, art therapy, and the Ornaments for Altadena program, which helps families rebuild holiday traditions lost in the disaster. Winter Bloom has become a cornerstone of Altadena’s recovery, proving that entrepreneurship, creativity, and mutual support can rebuild what flames destroyed.
